Conversation with Dollmaker - Renata Jansen

I had the lovely opportunity to meet with Renata Jansen via Zoom and talk "dolls"  Can't get any better than that for a perfect day.  Drop in and see what got her started making dolls.
As yes, when dollmakers get together we can talk! *smiling*.  Thank goodness for editing so that I can share some of her best advice and artwork.  Don't forget to check out where you can find her at the end of the video.
Also these Conversation videos will be up shortly on the IADR Youtube channel of our own!  Yep, I started one up and already have the video of the last Juried show on there with these clips following soon.  Here is the link if you like to help get us started with subscribers *smiling.

Let's play - but before we get too caught up in the game, I think that I should make clear the difference in how we can play the 2023 Christmas Event over the 2023 Juried Shows.

As mentioned before, the Juried Show entries should be on the QT (Slang as Used in the expression on the Q.T., meaning secretly or in confidence), because the juried shows are judged by our own judges and we want to play fair there.  That means not to put your doll information out on social media so as to not possibly influence the judges.

BUT --- did you know that doesn't apply to our Christmas Event!!!  This year's theme is "Magical Memories of Christmas" and the more I have thought on this and after hearing the voices of some of our members... I didn't realize how freeing this show truly will be.
Let me explain.  First of all, because the theme is magical memories, this can be anything you want as long as you explain how it supports the Event theme.  It doesn't have to be just about Santa and elves.  For myself one of my very first Christmas toys was a pink stuffed rabbit.  Now if the rabbit follows our registry guidelines which is:
  • Fantasy animals Anthropomorphic dolls (animals acting as humans with human characteristics).  Anthropomorphic dolls would be dolls that are upright, presumed to be talking, dressed as humans, or acting as if human.
then by creating a rabbit doll and dressing it, the rabbit can be in the Event as one of my 'Magical Memories of Christmas'.   So the sky is the limit as long as it stays within our rules and theme if you are wanting to be judged for the Event's competition. AND... if you want to participate but not be put in for consideration for the competition... you can make whatever you want... no limitations except... and there is always an exception... no gore.  See previous blog for more information on that.

Now here is where we begin to play!  Because this event is chosen by the people we don't have to be on the QT about it.  In fact I encourage people to be sharing their works in progress for this event!  We can even get together and maybe do some brainstorming - zoom events about it.  The more you post, the more people know about what we are doing.
The more people know about the your doll, the bigger the interest of people that might come to vote.  Remember - voters don't have to be members of IADR.  This is where you get to call in those "favors" of your aunt, cousins, and siblings to come vote for you.  It's never to soon to start giving them peeks *smiling*.
Now this is where we also play TAG - YOUR IT!  Because if you tag me in your posts regarding anything you want to have me share to our three IADR pages/groups, I am more than willing to do that.  So, if you post on your own personal timeline and tag me, then I know I can share it to everyone in the IADR.
But... (there is always a but... *smiling*), if your post is important to read then post it to the public IADR and the private Facebook sites, because when I share your posts the verbiage gets shrunk to the next level down.  To TAG me or not is up to you, but know I am willing to share your images because the more places you can post - the more you can be seen.  Again, when you are posting out there remember to include the IADR (except for current juried show entries before they are judged) because the more activity we get... again, the more your art is seen.

There will be further updates about the Christmas Event coming out in the near future, but I wanted to get more information out to the IADR members for this new event.  This is your one Freebie event where you can make (within the thin guidelines) your vision - so have fun with it.  I can't wait to see what magic starts happening!

Welcome Exciting 2023!

Yes, 2022 was a crazy year but I am so excited about 2023 already.  Between creating the new website and hosting my first juried show in 2022, it has been a blast getting to know all of you wonderful members of IADR.

Now on to 2023 and what we can do to make IADR a busy and active group with wonderful creations to not only share but to sell as well.  And with any new year there are New Year Resolutions to make.
The one thing that keeps coming back to my mind is how many people wanted to help keep IADR alive when it was going through it's transition and asked  "What can I do?"
So with these four suggested 2023 New Year Resolutions - think of them as ways you can help IADR.
Share - what you are doing and any tips or suggestions.  When you post something, you have the option to post in both the public group as well as our private group.  Double the options to be seen by doing both which also creates more activity for both groups.  You can post in the public and share to the private Facebook group to make it easier if you like.  Just keep in mind that juried show entry posts are for after the event has been judged.  The excitement and anticipation to see the final production of the wonderful work showcased in these juried events make their own Red Carpet feeling.
Be You - Be your awesome friendly self by commenting and reacting to the posts in both the public and private group.  This helps all of us to see a post and to stay informed.  It also boosts our reach in Facebook as well as warms the heart.  I have truly appreciated all the wonderful comments and reactions I have received thus far - keep it up!
Reach Out - Reach out this year by building your Artist's Studio page on the IADR website.  Contribute to the Registry, participate in the Juried shows, and be in our new Christmas Event this year.  These are fun and engaging ways to not only increase public awareness of you and your work, but also a great way to challenge & grow.  Plus every time you send something to me to upload on your Artist's Studio page, you are increasing traffic to our website.  Every time you are checking the page to stay up on current events you are boosting our opportunity for coming up in the search algorithms.  Don't hesitate to reach out.
Grow - Grow by using our website.  Link your store sites to your Artist's pages... as just another way for someone to discover you.  Use our hashtag in your posts for Instagram (read more about that in the newsletter).  You can also expand your reach by sharing your Youtube channel information with us through our tutorial section.  (Contact me for information on that if interested.)
So, with adopting these 2023 Resolutions, you may notice that with your help by exercising your voice and your art on our Facebook pages (as well as the IADR website), you might loose that feeling of being alone and of not being seen in that huge space of the World Wide Web.  Who knows, you might gain (but a good gain - *smile*) of wonderful supportive friends that will cheer you on and thereby feed and nurture IADR as well.  Bring on 2023... we're ready for it!
