English: The Queen of Palermo: "Donna Franca Florio." With this painting of Donna Franca Florio, I sought to capture a piece of the history of my native Sicily. Married to Ignazio Florio—a scion of one of Palermo’s most prominent merchant families—Donna Franca was a leading noblewoman of the Sicilian *Belle Époque*, celebrated for both her intellect and her beauty. She hosted illustrious figures in her home, including royalty, tsars, artists, and poets. Intrigued by the history of the Florio family, I found the story behind her portrait particularly fascinating.

Commissioned by her husband in 1902, it was not completed until 1924—and was ultimately never purchased by the family. Legend has it that when the painter, Giovanni Boldini, finally finished the portrait, her husband took offense at her pose and the revealing fit of her gown, demanding that the artist make alterations. Today, X-ray analysis has confirmed the presence of superimposed layers of paint concealing Donna Franca’s body beneath. I have chosen to depict theversion that I find most appealing.
