Joli Papillon
Joli Papillon, or "Pretty Butterfly" in French, was created as an homage to my late sister who was a French teacher for most of her life. An avid outdoors person, she always believed that butterflies were messengers from beyond and would whisper to them when they would alight on her finger.
Standing 20 inches tall, including her custom wood base, she is a cloth, soft sculpture doll with wired legs and arms. Her base is hand painted in a mandala pattern, gold on cream. She is wearing a cream gown of embroidered netting over a cream faux silk chemise that is shirred at the bodice. Tiny sequins and clear beads capture the light to wink at you as if to say "come and hear the message I have for you..." Pearled trim encircles her waist ending in a bustle of chiffon flowers at the back. A dazzling rhinestone button adorns her bodice. Delicate net petticoats and faux silk bloomers complete her attire. Delicate rings sparkle from her fingers as she holds a glass terrarium from a golden chain. Inside the terrarium is a tiny monarch butterfly.
Her soft yarn hair is shaped to be reminiscent of medieval hennin headdress and adorned with the same pearl trim that circles her waist. It is crowned by a rhinestone and gold metal embellishment. She wears medieval-inspired long-toed shoes of cream venise lace studded with glass seed beads. Her face is sculpted and painted with inks, pastels and watercolors.
