Hiawatha is not a fictional character. He was a statesman, peacemaker, chief, hunter, husband and father. He was a Mohawk who lived with the Onandaga; both are tribes of the Iroquois Confederacy. The bead design on his clothing is typical Iroquois. The poet Longfellow made him famous in an epic poem but incorrectly associated him with the Ojibwa People.
