One Person's Trash...

I am sure you have heard the saying before of "One man's trash is another man's treasure".  Well, as I return from my final doll show for the year, this saying popped into my mind as I unpacked all my treasures I received over the week.
Actually, I like to think of my "treasures" more as doll making potential.  Maybe it was the way I was raised as I know my mother was very creative in the many ways she could make treasures. Or maybe it is just my own twisted mind and sense of humor.

For example, one of the fun gifts the doll artists received was a "very small" bottle of spiced Rum. This was of course in keeping with the theme of the doll show which was PIRATES!  Now I know a few of the ladies giggled at receiving this bottle of decadent and spicy alcoholic potential. While myself, I was already thinking of throwing away the Rum so I could use this bottle for a future dollmaking project.
It truly is how we each see the potential in the treasures we receive that allows us to create something that we haven't dreamed of before.  That is the magic and fun of dollmaking.  Just like this snail - is he wearing a broken tea cup or a very stylish shell that no one else will be able to replicate?  So, keep on thinking outside the box (or in this case shell) and let your inspiration run rampant as you too discover your own treasures.

Tell Us...

It isn't strange belonging to more than one doll organization.  It isn't strange to be an IADR member and still be involved in other doll shows and activities.  So - TELL US... when you are.
For example, I am also a member of ODACA which is Original Doll Artist Council of America.  I will be flying off to Virginia next week to participate in the ODACA Day event which also happens to be part of the UFDC Convention (UFDC is United Federation of Doll Clubs, Inc.).

The ODACA Day is July 22nd with the theme of pirates (which I am trying to complete a couple of characters for).  I haven't done a pirate before so this is a fun challenge.
Since the IADR is about promoting our members, let us know if you are participating in any shows or events and we will happily get the word out about it.  The IADR is about supporting each other and what we do *smiling* whether it is one of our own events or one you are involved in.
2026 IADR CONVENTION PLANNING COMMITTEE will be having their next meeting on Wednesday July 16th, 2025 at 9 am MST (which is 5 pm in Italy).  Do you want to be a part of it?  Then drop me an email at [email protected] so that I can include you in the chat group and send you the Zoom link.

Just Winging It...

How will you know how far you can fly if you never spread your wings?  A popular quote but how can you fly if your wings are still developing?
You might not know even where to begin and that is where the International Art Doll Registry helps it's members.  As I mentioned last week, we have a tutorial section devoted to just wings.  Just a reminder, all these tutorials have been generously donated by members and are FREE to members.
Visit the tutorials section to see the three new tutorials I just added.  One is my Silk Faery Wings tutorial created using crayons.  I also have added the Italian version as well.
When to my delight as digging round looking for things in the hidden depths of my computer memories, I discovered another beautiful gem.  I now have also added Fantasy Wings by Deb Wood.

So as the saying goes: Spread your wings and fly.

Need Inspiration???

Need a little inspiration or just don't know how to do something that you have been wanting to try?  Have you checked out the many resources available to our IADR (International Art Doll Registry) members?
There is a whole section called Anatomy Reference Guides where you will find images for bone sizes as well as muscles to help with those for sculpting adults to babies.  There are even hands and feet for those looking for an unique pose.
Check out the Tutorial section - this is a treasure trove of inspiration!
From specific tutorials like Sculpting Hands with Deb Wood or China Painting Eyebrows from MisPlace Dolls, that is just the beginning.  There are also a Costuming section, a Wing section, and even a little bit of Miscellaneous to look at.
These resources have all been generously donated to the IADR library and they are free to IADR members.  Also this is another way to get involved!!   We are in need of some helpful tips or inspiration for the Fiber Arts as that interest grows.
Also think "Marketing"!  What do I mean by that?  When a tutorial or project idea is sent to the IADR library, it can be linked back to the person who supplied it.  This is a great way to cross-market for those that have websites.  Also, if you have supplied tutorials for the IADR Art Doll magazine, I don't automatically add them to the library.  I'll try to get better about asking about that because when a tutorial or project is submitted to the IADR Library, there is a reference to who supplied it.  This gives the person name recognition and if they share links how they can be found (for those that don't have websites) - that can help their social media platforms grow.
Let's keep our IADR library healthy by using it and adding to it.  If you wish to add tutorials or projects, send them to [email protected].
