Terry Thomas
Meet Terry of The Dark Faerie
Terry Thomas, a highly collected Australian Artist has been sculpting faeries for about five years now, but started making polymer clay necklaces in the mid eighties. She also worked with ceramics, leatherwork, lead lighting and bread dough sculptures (Salt Dough).
Terry is well known for her tiny delicate faces and her immaculate eye for detail.
Looking into the face of one of Terry's tiny pieces, you almost expect them to speak to you and whisper secrets of the tiny people.
Terry is a self taught artist, She told me "I learn from everyone and everything but I am self taught as such"
Who inspires Terry ? We all know there are many wonderful Artist's out there, we all have our favorites, "So many inspire me . such as Pixywillow and my late Mother, I am lucky to have a small circle of friends such as Judy (Once we were Faeries) Debbie Richards (The Mistweavers Realm) Debbie McCain (Whispers in the Woods) and my dear Kim (Fairies of the Myst) who all keep me both inspired and centered. I have met many wonderful people along my journey with the faeries and probably would need two pages to list all of the people who are special to me".
Terry says she talks to her pieces as she creates them , as they come to life in her hands . She finds inspiration all around her, and says "It would be easier to say where I don’t find inspiration, because nearly everything inspires me, everything from people, animals to trees. My son is a wonderful inspiration."
You can usually find Terry's work for sale on Ebay but she does also take commissions and if you would to talk to her about a commission you can contact her through her website
Like many of us us, Terry loves to listen to music as she sculpts, she told me "I love movie soundtracks, my latest favourite is Twilight, however I did learn that sculpting to Meatloaf's 'Bat out of Hell' made wild faeries".
Terry sculpts whenever she can. Mainly in the daytime and say's she usually makes wings in the evening. She makes the most delicious wings and often creates them for other well known Artist's.
Terry works mostly with puppenfimo or living doll (prosculpt) and uses what ever it takes to get the effect she is after, such as artists pastels, genesis heat set oils or acrylic paints.
She often uses fabulous vintage fabrics and findings for her dolls costumes and prides herself on the intricate details.
Does Terry have any words of advice for budding new artists?
Yes, and perhaps the wisest advice of all,
"Patience, practice and persistence, and love what you do".
Terry came from an artist background, like so many of us drawn into the OOAK community.
"My Mother was very artistic, she did wonderful drawings of people when I was a child, she also told fabulous stories of warrior faeries and tree sprites, all of which she had created herself. My Nan was a dress and costume maker, who taught me to knit, crochet and sew".
Terry and her Family
Terry likes to spend time reading when she can and finds it relaxes her . She also enjoys collecting faeries and dragons when she is able to and has a nice slowly growing collection of OOAK Fairies.
Terry is married to a wonderful supportive man who is also her best friend .
They have a 9 year old son together.
Most of her time centers around her family, volunteering at her son's school and caring for their two lovely little whippets! "We have two six month old pups and a cat. I walk the dogs when I need to clear my head, some days they get two or three walks but mostly only one".
Terry and her family live on the Beautiful south coast of New South Wales in Australia.
